What is an adaptor sleeve?
Adaptor sleeves are a component used for locating bearings with either a cylindrical or tapered centre or bore. There are many different types of adaptor sleeves for various applications and bearing types. However, most will have similar features and are used for the same purpose; to change a shaft size to accommodate a certain bearing size.
Designs and variants
While different types of steel-bearing adaptor sleeves will have some unique features, there are generally two main types; a sleeve with a cylindrical outer shape and a sleeve with a tapered outer shape.
Cylindrical bearing adaptor sleeves
A cylindrical adapter sleeve is a fairly simple design that often features a thread for a fastening device like a nut or other retaining component. A cylindrical adaptor sleeve allows you to change the sizing of a standard cylindrical shaft to the desired bearing bore size.
Tapered bearing adaptor sleeve
Some cylindrical machine shafts need to be adapted for a tapered bearing bore. This type of adaptor sleeve bearing fits snug around a cylindrical shaft but has a tapered outer surface to accommodate a tapered bearing bore.
