What is a thrust bearing?

A thrust bearing can be configured with all bearing types, including:

• Ball bearings
• Cylindrical bearings
• Spherical bearings
• Needle bearings

Thrust bearings are a type of rotary bearing generally used to accommodate axial loads; however, some designs can equally be applied to radial loads.

Different types of thrust bearing

Thrust bearings provide a reliable, high-performance solution that continues to be applied to more and more applications; therefore, there is a wide range of thrust bearing types.

Single direction thrust bearing

A single-direction thrust ball bearing consists of a shaft and housing washer with a raceway, with the ball bearings in a cage assembly. A single-direction thrust ball bearing performs well under axial loads operating in one direction. These types of bearings, however, are not suitable for radial loads.

Double direction thrust bearing

A double-direction thrust ball bearing operates with axial loads in both directions but, like single-direction thrust bearings, is not suitable for radial loads. Double-direction thrust ball bearings consist of a shaft washer with a raceway on each face, dual assemblies with ball and cage, and two housing washers with the raceways. 

Full-complement thrust ball bearing

A full complement thrust ball bearing is designed for axial loads but not radial loads. These bearings allow for high load carrying capacity and operate best at lower speeds.

Thrust bearings are not confined to ball bearing designs and have been configured with other roller bearing types. Some examples include:

• Thrust needle bearings
• Tapered roller thrust bearing
